Performance showed an upward turn

The ports of Helsinki saw a good level of cargo traffic, but passenger traffic did not return to pre-pandemic levels. However, the development was very positive compared to the previous year. The company’s turnover was EUR 89.4 million. The Port’s result remained negative.

The Port of Helsinki Ltd’s most significant revenue items were cargo charges (41% of turnover), vessel charges (18%) and passenger charges (17%).

In 2022, the Port of Helsinki Ltd received a total of EUR 0.3 million in business cost support granted by the state.

The Port’s operating costs were EUR 38.9 million (5%). The increase in energy costs and the full use of terminals compared to the pandemic years significantly increased the figure, despite the savings measures. The energy efficiency project of terminals, which was completed at the end of the year, is expected to deliver significant savings in energy consumption in the coming years.

Productivity

The Port of Helsinki Ltd’s productivity is monitored with the productivity index and the turnover per person-year key figure. Both showed a positive development due to an upturn in business activity.

  • In 2022, the productivity index depicting the development of the Port’s total productivity increased to 108.9 points. This is an increase of 18.2 points from 2021.
  • The turnover per person-year figure turned positive again after the pandemic years. The figure was EUR 54,000 (2021: EUR -99,000).

Investments

In 2022, the Port of Helsinki’s investments totalled approximately EUR 17.0 million.

The most significant investments were related to the modernisation of the ramps and quays in Vuosaari Harbour to accommodate new types of traffic, as well as the development of onshore power systems for ships and the energy efficiency of buildings in the city harbours.
