Local cooperation improved transparency and increased understanding
In 2022, cooperation with the Port’s neighbouring areas focused on presenting the starting points and planning of the Port’s development programme to the residents of the neighbouring areas. Close dialogue from the very beginning of the programme improves the understanding of needs on both sides.
Fruitful cooperation with the residents of the nearby neighbourhoods is important to the Port. The work of the Port of Helsinki is guided by the comfort of the neighbouring areas and good communication. The Port is cooperating with the City on the development of urban traffic. The Port also has its own projects that are implemented in its area, the objective of which is to further streamline the embarkation process.
Awareness of the port operations was raised among residents and the general public, for example by communicating openly about port activities, participating in local events and listening to residents’ views.
- The Port’s development programme was presented to residents’ associations at numerous discussion events over the course of 2022.
- In September, the Port of Helsinki joined the Uusimaa ELY Centre at an EIA public meeting, which was part of the Environmental Impact Assessment phase of the Port’s development programme.
- The Port took part in supporting several public events in its neighbouring areas. The Port also participated in events such as Baltic Sea Day, Vuosaari Harbour Day and Hyvän tuulen fest in Jätkäsaari, providing information on its operations to the residents of the neighbouring areas.
- The Port engages in discussion regarding port operations on its Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram channels. In total, the Port’s social media channels have more than 10,200 followers. In 2022, the main topics of discussion included the Port as an employer, environmental protection and new vessels operating on the Helsinki route.
- In the spring and autumn, the Port of Helsinki once again organised a cleaning afternoon in the Jätkäsaari neighbourhood to make a personal contribution to enhancing the pleasantness of the area.
Generating societal benefits is the Port’s strength
The Port regularly measures its reputation and the interest group support correlating with it. As the West Harbour is the busiest of Helsinki’s harbours, the measurement is carried out among the residents of Jätkäsaari. The same survey will also examine the views of Helsinki City Councillors and Helsinki residents who live in places other than Jätkäsaari.
The research has been conducted with the Reputation&Trust model in 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2022. The research was not conducted in 2021 but it was conducted again in 2022.
- The Port’s reputation rating among the people of Jätkäsaari was at a moderate level: 3.21 (2020: 3.45). Although there was a decline in every category, the perception that the Port generates societal benefits through its business operations was still at a fairly good level.
Continued support for climate and marine environment
The Port of Helsinki engages in sponsorship, marketing and communication partnerships with companies and communities that embody and promote the Port’s values and objectives, such as sustainability and collaboration.
In 2022, the Port continued its collaboration and charity work under two main themes:
